The high cost of a mass bred dog

Debbie Jordan spent nearly $140,000 raising two sick dogs bought from breeders she claims were unethical.

Marcus, her Cavalier King Charles spaniel, died two years ago from a genetic heart disease - after thousands of dollars of medical treatment failed to save him.

The financial stress and heartbreak continued when Debbie’s second dog, Riki - bought from the same breeders - was also diagnosed with congenital heart disease.

The seven-year-old spaniel has myriad genetic afflictions, including spurs on his spine and dermatitis.

Every month Debbie pays $250 for heart tablets, $165 for general care and at least $120 for other medical expenses.

A British study found the average cost of raising a dog was $53,000 -more if the dog had hereditary diseases.

Mark Amott, from Southern Animal Emergency Centre, said each year thousands of owners were caught unaware when their young dogs became ill.

Vineyard Vet Hospital doctor Rob Zammit blamed the rising numbers of sick dogs on mass breeding from parents with hereditary illnesses.
